This website is in honor of John Elder who is retiring after teaching 5th grade at Norfolk Christian Schools for 38 years. Mr. Elder has faithfully gone the distance, from start to finish, personifying loving dedication to his students.
We, his family, know he has looked on his time at NCS as his “calling” and consistently strived to do his work as unto the Lord, whether it was in the classroom, on the playground or as a varsity coach.

Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteI still remember going home and asking my parents about their mortgage and why they were paying so much money in interest... I also remember the math excercise where we doubled a penny for a month. Thanks for being a male role model in the middle school environment.
-Joshua Crouse
John,
ReplyDeleteWell Done Teacher, Coach, Colleague, Father, Husband, Friend and Christ Follower!
As a colleague, I always remembered you as a team player willing to jump in and support other teachers. Just coming across your path at school, church, at games or other events, it did not matter where, brightened my day. Seeing that our paths were going to cross put a smile on my face as I anticipated some funny friendly comment I knew you were about to say as I approached. Thanks for making life fun.
My own children whom you taught, enjoyed learning in your class due to the humor and creativity you brought to the classroom. Kathy and I are indebted to the impact you had on our children and the investment you made in their lives. Thank You John! I wish we had not left the area until they all had a chance to call you "Teacher."
I appreciated your support when I had the privilege of coaching your son Jeff on the Varsity basketball team. Jeff was a talented player and had a lot of good games but as a parent you handled it well when things were going great as well as when I may have challenged him to make adjustments in his game (or at least you dealt with it internally and never let it show). I still feel bad that God called me away before the end of his career.
Kathy and I enjoyed being in the Colossians 2:7 group with you and Joy. In retirement you will have more time to review your verses and do more half days in prayer. It was obvious to us that you were a man of God. Thanks for living a life of integrity.
Your faithful service over all these years in Christian education has provided the stability that has made Norfolk Christian a special place of ministry. Your name now goes into the Norfolk Christian Hall of Fame along side the many other greats. I am proud to have been able to call you my colleage, friend and brother in the Lord. May God grant me the grace to follow in your steps.
Coram Deo,
Dave Walker
John is actually retiring. A younger brother or sister retiring is not a pleasant reminder of my age.
ReplyDeleteFor many years John and family lived in Norfolk while we took up residence in Indianapolis, Indiana. Ah, but physical distance does not remove understanding of one's brother. Many believe distance restricts vision to a porthole glimpse. Not the case when it comes to my brother. John has a veranda of talents which includes dedication and capabilities appreciated by all.
As the Bible says."Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that built it". s. 127:1
Certainly the Lord built John's house.
Of course there is the wonderful humor in the genes of Elders, mostly from our mother's side.
I think I recall this story mother told.
Seems seven year old John had finished his summer vacation and gone back to school. Two days later, his teacher phoned mother (YES WE HAD PHONE WAY BACK THEN) to tell her that John was misbehaving. Wait a minute said mother " I had John for two months and not once did I call you when he misbehaved.
No one knows if John had to call a parent regarding a student who misbehaved. But, if he did I sure hope the parent gave John the same response our spunky mom did.
Happy retirement John, we love you.
Barbara & Howaqrd Elder
Mr Elder,
ReplyDeleteI remember a day in 5th grade Math when you told everyone in class how well I had done on a quiz. I was beaming! It was the first time I ever felt "good at Math". Two days later, I bombed the test...so it was also the last time I ever felt good at Math. Thanks for those two days!
Best wishes, Jessica Johnson Law
John,
ReplyDeleteI've always appreciated people with a sense of humor....so you and I quickley became friends!! Middle school can sometimes be tough...but you always found humor in every situation. You're part of the reason I have such fond memories of my time in the MS. I've loved Joy since the moment I met her...and two of my other favorite people are Chris & Jeff....you done good!:) I don't think I need to say enjoy retirement...you're one that's always known how to enjoy every minute of life God gives us. God bless you and yours always!
much love,
Debbie Zuchowski
Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteYou're the best at many things.
You were my teacher, my coach, my friend. Yet when I think of you I recall that smile of yours most of all. That smile helped me do my best. You helped me grow into a better person.
Keep smiling,
Doug Weatherly
P.S.-
I'm sorry I missed your retirement gathering, I just heard about it today.
Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteI remember you having a wonderful sense of humor. When you told a joke, you sometimes didn't crack a smile, which often left me wondering if you were pulling my leg or being completely serious! You helped make that ackward transition into middle school a breeze! I will always have fond memories of you and 5th grade!
If my mother could be here, I know she would thank you for all the laughs and for your friendship, she told me often that you had the biggest heart for your students.
Enjoy this new chapter in your life!
a grateful student,
Barbie VALENTINE Gustavson
Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the care you took in teaching all of your 5th graders over the years. I don't recall any specific math lessons you taught, but I know you practiced quit a bit of patience in teaching me - because of my struggles with math and my socializing with my classmates! I wish you a wonderful and restful retirement and great fulfillment in all that you do. May God bless you just as you have blessed my life and the lives of so many other students you've taught.
Much love,
Maren Carlson Herzog
It's been MANY years since 5th grade, but I remember the following from Mr. Elder's class:
ReplyDelete1. M&Ms to teach fractions
2. Hertz rent-a-shepherd
3. The story of a gorilla breaking through the wall to teach the scientific method
4. Learning the systems of the body
5. Everyone taking off one shoe and sticking it in a bag
6. Laughing a lot and actually enjoying learning
To simply say "thank you" for being such an amazing teacher, touching countless lives for the Lord, and instilling a love of learning in your students is not enough, but will have to suffice for the time being. I pray you thoroughly enjoy your well-earned retirement.
In the Lamb,
Matt Kickasola
Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteThank you for teaching all 3 of my girls. They all loved you very much. Since hearing that you were retiring, Nicole and Olivia have shared some very funny memories. Your tradition of decorating the desks at Christmas was one of their favorite Norfolk Christian traditions.
Thank you for being a Godly example for my children. Also, for the kind words you've said to me the last few years.
You will be missed very much.
Randy Trevethan
John,
ReplyDeleteYou have been a blessing to our family, I pray you will enjoy many more years in God's service in what he calls to.
The Daffron Family
Dear Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteI wished that I had sat in your 5th grade classroom as one of your students, at least for one day if all possible. Too late for me now. It sounded that you are a terrific 5th grade teacher. How did you get your opportunity to teach for 38 years? I am thinking that, it must have come from the mighty LORD.
I pray that you will have a ton of fun when you put down your "Teacher's Rod".
Bless you,
Allison Layman
John,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the blessing you have been to me while working on staff together at the Lower School...your wisdom and love for the Lord have often given great encouragement. We also greatly appreciate how much our Hannah learned from you in 5th grade math and science and how much she also enjoyed your humor!
Gratefully,
Geneva Kirven
Dear John,
ReplyDeleteWell done, good and faithful servant! Thanks so much for your example as the teacher of my son and daughter. One thing I will always remember is you brought humor into their Math class with many practical applications. Sir Cumference's visit to your class was one of those experiences!
There are also memories of watching my children create diagrams of the different systems of the body. You conveyed a love of learning and life which 5th graders needed to remain excited about learning. As a result my daughter is a nurse caring for children in an intensive care setting today. Your Science class was one step toward being prepared for that career.
Thanks also for the example you have been to me of a caring and faithful educator as we have served as teachers at NCS for many years together.
It's been a joy to teach both Chris and Jeff when they were 8th graders. You and Joy did a great job raising your children. I've been blessed to have brief encounters with your grandson during Wise groups at NCMS this year as we checked out the stock market. Your godly influence is evident in each of their lives.
May God continue to use you in all your future endeavors during retirement. You've never been one to sit on the sidelines so I know God has many new fun adventures ahead for you and Joy.
Enjoy this new season of life!
In His Care,
Sue Crouse
From the silliness of your sense of humor to the seriousness of your Biblical integration, your teaching career has impacted many students and teachers with whom you have worked. How privileged we have been! Thank you John! Enjoy the next season of service. We'll miss you at Norfolk Christian Lower school.
ReplyDeleteMany Blessings,
Tina Randell
Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteThanks for making some kid in my 5th grade class stand on his head and eat something to prove that digestion defies gravity. Thanks also for making annoying boys stay in during lunch and write "I will not be crude, rude, or barbaric in class" multiple times on the board.
You made 5th grade great for hundreds of us. Thanks.
With Hope,
Erin Hatcher
John: You were one of a few male teachers at NCS and it was such an important role model for my boys. You showed that a man could be gentle, yet strong; you showed that a man could show love, yet be a leader. We know that you sacrificed much to remain at NCS and we appreciate that sacrifice. You worked hard in the summers to help make ends meet; you always had time for your students and a friendly encouraging word for them and their parents. You will probably know the impact you had on so many lives only when you stand before the Lord and hear, "Well done good and faithful servant."
ReplyDeleteMr Elder:
ReplyDeleteThank you for being such a wonderful teacher and role model. I do not necessarily look back at middle school with fond memories; but it is the people, people like you, that made all the difference. My mom still to this day calls me with "John Elder jokes". (...target on every corner...I liked that) Good luck to you in your retirement. You've earned the peace and quiet. May the Lord bless you and your family.
John,
ReplyDeleteThe four Stricklands each learned so much from you. Even their grandmother, on Grandparents Day, learned a few things. I enjoyed working with you as Room Mom and teacher's aide. You always appreciated anything that I did and was quick to tell me. I'm sure your students will remember your praise and encouragement to each of them. Praying your retirement will be full of life!
Kathy Strickland
Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteThank you for invested 38 year of your life in the mission of education. You have shown faithfulness, dedication and commitment in the years of your service to God and to the Christian community. You are the gem of NCS. I am thankful that my three children had gone through your classroom at 5th grade. May the Lord bless you with peace and joy as you discover the new and wonderful things He has for your life.
George and Ginny Wong
Dear Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your retirement! I know that you will be greatly missed. Thank you for all the love you have invested in the lives of so many. I have a horrible memory, but one thing about you stands out so very clearly in my mind. I struggled so much with math and 5th grade was no exception. At one point I was failing your math class and you had my Mom and I come in to talk with you. I will never forget your gentle smile, your grace and your encouragement. There was no shame, no harshness...just love, grace and concern. Thank you for showing me Christ in this way. You were His hands and heart of love, even in a very embarassing situation. My little 5th grade heart never forgot that and I have experienced God's grace in the same way so many times since! May God continue to bless you as you enter your next season of calling.
Kirsten Carlson Furr
Dear Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteThank you for being an exemplary role model for me and my family over these many years. Liz was always so encouraged by you when she was teaching there. Few have ever embodied all that Norfolk Chrstian is really about. You are one of them. Thank you.
Now that this phase of your life is coming to a close, could it be that THIS is the time to seize the moment and fulfill your dream of becoming a stand up comic? You have so much practical experience. Of course, as you develop this new career it is important to note that you will no longer have captive audiences for your jokes.
All the best in the days ahead.
Michael Ball
Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteI will never forget the relief I felt when you caught me reading Nancy Drew in science class, and didn't get angry! You came up behind me, leaned over my shoulder, and said "and THEN...". Of course I jumped out of my skin, but you just told me to put the book away and read it later! Thanks for your incredible patience with so many kids at a very trying age. We appreciate you even more now!
Love, Katie Dunlap Johnston
Coach Elder,
ReplyDeleteI don't think I will ever forget those years running Cross Country. I learned from you what it means to be a true encourager, to keep a good sense of humor, and to approach life with a confident steadiness. Too many times, we don't get the opportunity to express our thanks, so I am glad for this blog. Thanks for not only being a great coach, but also being obedient to God's call on your life and building into the lives of others. Knowing you was a significant blessing to me in my teenage years, and I have no doubt it continues to be an influence in my life and ministry.
Grace,
Jamie Cupschalk
Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteI remember watching you playing basketball with my daughter, Alexandria, and other students after school. I said to her, "I pray that you will have Mr. Elder for a teacher when you get to 5th grade." God answerd my prayers and two years later Alexandria was in your class. I knew that you would be the perfect inspiration for her and you would motivate her to do her best in all things. You did and she did. Thank you for the encouragement, laughter, and support you give all of the students at NCS. May God bless you in your retirement.
~Robyn Blatner
Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteI apologize now because I am unable to make it to your retirement celebration. I will be in class at that time. But I just wanted to say how much I appreciate everything you taught me. I did not have the pleasure of having you as a homeroom teacher but I did have you for math and science, which were my favorite clases. I always looked forward to your class everyday. The effort you put into making it as enjoyable as possible really made kids learn. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication at Norfolk Christian and you will truly be missed.
Love, Michelle Strickland
Dear Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteI never got to see you on a motorcycle or with hair, but I did get to see a teacher who loved his kids and loved Jesus. 5th grade with you was good times.
You had pitch perfect humor for 5th graders, something I now look back on with wonder. I also liked the eating an apple while upside down trick as a demonstration of peristalsis. I remember the math lesson in averages because my height was the class average (145 cm). I also remember that I found out I needed glasses in your math class because I couldn't see any of the decimal points you were putting on the board.
Anyways, a huge thanks for all you invested in us.
God Bless,
Andrea Mates nee Wong
John, when I think of you, I think of Micah 6:8
ReplyDelete"He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" I am so grateful to the Lord for the kind and profound influence you had on my children as their teacher. I salute you on this your retirement for a job well done! Faithfulness is a word that well describes your years of service to God and to NCS. God bless you!
Gratefully,
Goree Dunlap
Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteYou are one of the few teachers that truly understands those with learning disabilities. Rather than making exceptions for them, you seek to find out how they learn best and you are willing to wait for them to find the answer to a problem.
I enjoyed working with you last year when Daniel was in your class. You have been an inspiration to many people.
Enjoy this time of retirement. And remember, life is uncertain, so eat dessert first (maybe a piece of that pi)! :)
Anita
Dear John: My heartfelt thanks for your many years of devotion at NCS. Not only did my daughters, Kimberly, Carrie and Ashley benefit from your calm, gracious spirit but now my grandson, Kyle has become a fan of yours. Wishing you and Joy continued happiness in your well deserved retirement. Jean and Jim Hurston
ReplyDeleteMr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad this is not a parting of ways for us as I know I'll be seeing you at church. However, this will be a HUGE loss for Norfolk Christian. You are my most memorable teacher, and I remember learning and retaining knowledge from you. Not only that, but you were yourself in front of us. There was no pretense and no show. We all loved and still love who you truly are, and we are all better for knowing you.
Thanks for letting me into the school countless times as I kept leaving things inside. My mom STILL makes cheesecake, and guess what: so do I! Just order whenever you get a hankerin'.
Have fun mowing lawns!
Kristen
John,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your many jokes and reminders of how everyday events can be related to the Kingdom of God. You are a great teacher, weaving a Christian World View into students -and teachers- many school days.
Blessings from Peggy Barclay and Family
Mr. Elder,
ReplyDeleteI'm a lucky guy, because I got to experience the 5th grade with you twice. Thank you so much for your hard work and patience. I'm sure it wasn't easy to teach me math around my busy schedule of drawing pictures and building airplanes out of pens and paper. I am truly grateful. Please enjoy your retirement.
Josh Dunlap
John, there are a lot of things I could say about you but I will limit them to just the good ones. I think you know that Phylis died last July from lung cancer but my thoughts include her as you meant so much to the both of us. I truly have never met anyone that demonstrates the "joy of salvation" as you do. Every time we saw you the consistency of joy was there. I know that there were difficult times in your life just like all of us but somehow you always generated an uplifting example. I particularly recall your support at the athletic events. It didn't matter how we were doing you always lifted us up. My sons Lou and David remember you that way even though they were never in your class. Thanks, John for crossing our path and being the Christian example to all of us. Your impact on students is an everlasting tribute and will be rewarded in heaven. I pray that your retirement years with Joy will be all you hoped and prayed for. I know you will be missed by many people.
ReplyDeleteBlessings from Lou Blows and family
Congratulations, Mr. Elder!
ReplyDeleteIt's been a few years since I was one of the room mothers for your 5th grade class when our son, Matt, was attending Norfolk Christian. I enjoyed working with you and always appreciated the obvious love you had for your students. Only the Lord knows the positive influence that your life has had on so many of your students. You have been such a blessing to so many young people and I'm sure you will find a way to continue sharing your faith with other young people you come in contact with in the future.
May God richly bless you,
Sharon Pollard
John,
ReplyDeleteFrom a room mom's point of view ---- your flexibility and "let's do it" approach made planning 5th grade events a creative pleasure. I still enjoy the photo of you and Patsy as Mickie and Minnie on "doubles day"! :)
Thanks for your "hands on" approach to teaching.
Many of your methods will be repeated around the world by those who were in your class; as well as those "on the fringes".
Sincerely,
JoAnn Evers
Mr. Elder-
ReplyDeleteYour retirement brings back fond memories of my first year at NCH. Fortunately, I had you as a teacher, which was just what I needed. Not only did you have an amazing knack for teaching 5th graders, but you also helped us grow spiritually, appreciate the world around us, and learn to follow our dreams (like becoming a Marine).
Thanks for your inspiration and dedication to so many kids for so many years.
-Dave Harvey
